- Hardy canes that sucker sparingly
- Royalty raspberries are late-ripening and produce heavily
- Large fruit and vigorous plants like a purple raspberry and high-quality fruit like a red raspberry
If you are starting a garden this year, you need the DeGroot Royalty Raspberry Starter Plant. The Royalty raspberry is a late-ripening cross between a purple and a red raspberry with the best features of both varieties.
Features of the DeGroot Royalty Raspberry Starter Plant
The Royalty raspberry is a summer-bearing variety. It has excellent yield potential that produces heavy quantities of fruit. The fruit is good for table use or freezing. It can also be cooked into jellies and jams. The berries have a light and sweet flavor that is excellent when paired with cheesecake.
From the purple raspberry, the Royalty raspberry inherits a large fruit size and good plant vigor. From the red raspberry, the Royalty raspberry inherits a high fruit quality. The canes are hardy, and they sucker sparingly.
Maintenance of the DeGroot Royalty Raspberry Starter Plant
This raspberry starter plant should be planted as soon as springtime in your area allows you to work the ground. Once planted, you will need to give the raspberry starts 1” of water per week. The Royalty raspberries need regular and shallow cultivation to keep them maintained.
These Royalty raspberries only bear fruit on 1-year-old stems, so the spent canes should be pruned after they bear fruit so that there is room for new canes to grow in. You should keep pruning after that to make sure that the stems don’t become tangled. Pruning will also increase their ability to bear fruit.
