This perennial produces 5-6” flowers that are a beautiful, deep crimson color. The Rouge Cardinal Clematis has widely spaced opposite leaves. It also has thin vines with tendrils that will entwine themselves around a fence or other support. This feature makes the Rouge Cardinal Clematis perfect for wall and fence cover.
This is a free-flowering variety of clematis; it will bloom from May to September. When fully grown, the Rouge Cardinal’s height is 8-12’. This starter plant is resistant to deer, walnut toxicity, aphids, clematis borer, stem rot, and slugs.
Planting DeGroot Rouge Cardinal Clematis Starter Plant
This clematis starter should be planted in fertile, well-drained alkaline soil in a sunny spot. For the best results, the roots should be kept cool and moist. Water the Rouge Cardinal regularly and place mulch or stone around its roots. The first spring after planting the Rouge Cardinal Clematis, prune the plant to 6-12” from the ground so that it can spend its energy on establishing a root system.
