FAQS
Chick season typically begins in early spring and runs through late summer. Availability may vary by store, so we recommend checking with your local C-A-L Ranch location for exact dates.
You’ll need a brooder (a safe, warm space), heat source, bedding, chick starter feed, a feeder, and a waterer. Optional items include a thermometer, electrolytes, and probiotics for added health support.
Start with a high-quality chick starter feed. You can choose medicated feed to help prevent coccidiosis or non-medicated feed if you prefer. Transition to grower feed at around 6–8 weeks and layer feed when they begin laying eggs.
Keep the brooder at about 95°F for the first week, then reduce the temperature by 5°F each week until the chicks are fully feathered. Always monitor their behavior—if they huddle under the heat source, they’re cold; if they stay far away, they’re too warm.
While not always necessary, vitamins, electrolytes, and probiotics can help support healthy growth, especially during stressful times like transport or temperature changes.
Chickens are social animals, so we recommend starting with at least 3–6 chicks to ensure a happy, healthy flock.
Yes! Most breeds get along well when raised together. Just make sure they’re similar in age and size to avoid bullying.
For the health and safety of all animals, live chicks cannot be returned. Please plan carefully before purchasing.
Keep the brooder clean and dry, provide fresh water and feed daily, and avoid overcrowding. Watch for signs of illness such as lethargy or pasty vent and address issues promptly.
Chicks can move to the coop once they are fully feathered and nighttime temperatures stay above 55°F—usually around 6–8 weeks old.
Yes! We offer starter kits that include essentials like feeders, waterers, and bedding. Check with your local store for availability.
